One of the most important churches of the Byzantine period after Hagia Sophia, this historic building is now used as a mosque and contains unique artworks. It is closed to visitors during prayer times, but outside of those hours, it can be visited as a museum. A major attraction for tourists, it is definitely a must-see.

Born as a 4th century church, later an Ottoman mosque, and celebrated as a museum, Chora is one of Istanbul’s finest showcases of Byzantine art. Its golden mosaics and vivid frescoes light up the narthexes and the main hall, offering an intimate look at sacred scenes and imperial life.
Tourist visits run from 09.00 to 18.00, except on Fridays when the mosque is reserved for worship. Entry stops 15 minutes before each prayer. Dress modestly; shorts are not allowed and women need a headscarf. You will enter from Kariye Türbesi Street, pass a security check in the garden, and photography without flash is fine but extra lighting is not permitted.
Chora Museum entrance for foreign visitors is next to the Ebu Said El Hudri Tomb.
Open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM (closed on Fridays for prayer).
No shorts for men or women; women must cover heads, scarves available for purchase.
No flash photography or supplemental lighting.
No entry during prayer times. Entrance is closed 15 minutes before prayer.
Some mosaics in the prayer section are covered; three mosaics depicting Jesus and Mary are discreetly concealed.
