What to Do in Kavacik

There are many things to do in Kavacik and the greater Beykoz area. The first place that comes to mind is Otağtepe. As in the days when Mehmet the Conqueror was preparing to take Istanbul, this hill seems to place the whole city beneath your feet. It is a spot where Istanbul’s natural beauty and the area’s deep history come together beautifully. From here, you can enjoy a captivating panorama of the Bosphorus and take photos of some of Istanbul’s most breathtaking scenery.

After restoration work, the area was renamed Fatih Korusu, and entry is free. Visitors should know that access to Otağtepe is restricted after a certain hour in the evening because the hill is very close to the bridge and there have allegedly been incidents caused by distractions in the area. Visiting hours are given as 10 a.m. to 17 p.m. in summer and may end earlier in winter, but it is best to check current details before you go. You also cannot bring food into this area.

From the hill, it takes around 10 minutes on foot to reach Anadoluhisarı, the Anatolian Fortress. You can continue your trip there as well. Built at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, directly across from Rumeli Fortress on the European side, it was positioned to control possible outside attacks. If you take a Bosphorus Cruise, you can admire both fortifications from excellent angles as they stand facing each other across the water in all their splendor.

Discovering Beykoz Further from Kavacik

Kavacik is a neighborhood within the Beykoz district. This wider region includes several historic places on Istanbul’s Anatolian side, including the Anatolian Fortress mentioned above and Küçüksu Pavilion. If you want to explore Beykoz more fully, there are several worthwhile stops nearby.

One of the most striking architectural places in the area is Hidiv Pavilion. At the elegant Hidiv Pavilion Restaurant, you can enjoy a refined meal, see stylish presentations, and often notice wedding celebrations taking place. Once again, the setting opens up to beautiful Bosphorus views. Also in Beykoz, the Anatolian Lighthouse, Yoros Castle, and Mihribat Grove are all places worth visiting if you have the time.

If you want to understand the geography of this side of the city better before your visit, the GoTürkiye travel portal and Istanbul transport resources such as IETT can help you plan routes and connections.

Where to Eat in Kavacik

Because Kavacik is a small part of Beykoz, you will find many dining suggestions throughout the surrounding district. For travelers who enjoy meat dishes, one classic choice in Istanbul is döner. While döner is available outside Turkey too, it is a traditional preparation and many visitors come specifically to try it from Turkish masters.

It would be a shame to leave without trying a Kavacik döner at one of the area’s best-known places. As its name suggests, Bayramoğlu Döner is one of the restaurants in Istanbul associated with excellent döner. It is worth remembering that choosing where to eat döner matters, since not every place maintains the same quality and cheaper options may disappoint.

Bayramoğlu also serves flavorful tandır, a dish linked to an old Turkish cooking method using an oven dug into the ground. Another option is Uskumru Restaurant, located directly below the Bosphorus Bridge. Here, the greens of the shoreline and the blues of the Bosphorus meet in one striking view. You can enjoy the restaurant’s food while looking out over the water from a memorable perspective.

If dinner by the Bosphorus leaves you wanting to see more of the strait, that is where a Bosphorus Cruise becomes especially appealing. There are many alternatives, including dinner cruises and routes with stops on the Asian side. If you are continuing your Istanbul itinerary afterward, landmark areas such as Beylerbeyi Palace can also fit naturally into a day on this side of the city.

Practical Tips for Visiting Kavacik

  • Come for the view: Otağtepe remains one of the area’s biggest draws.
  • Pair neighborhoods and history: Kavacik works well together with Anadoluhisarı and the broader Beykoz district.
  • Plan meals around the Bosphorus: The area is known both for döner and for scenic restaurants.
  • Check current visitor information: Access rules and hours for parks or viewpoints may change seasonally.

20 Spring Photography Spots in Istanbul (2026)

I shoot Istanbul for a living, and spring is the season I clear my calendar for. The light in April is clean and low, the erguvan (ehr-goo-VAHN, judas tree) throws purple across the hillsides, the tulips are in bloom, and the haze that flattens the summer skyline has not yet settled in. For about six
