Sadberk Hanim Museum collection

When the museum was first established, its collection consisted of about 3,000 items. Today, it contains more than 20,000 objects. Alongside predominantly Ottoman-period Islamic works, the collection includes European, Near Eastern, and Far Eastern objects made for the Ottoman market, as well as Ottoman textiles, costumes, and embroidery.

Its archaeological collection represents the material culture of the many civilizations that arose in Anatolia. These items date from between 6000 BC and the end of the Byzantine period in 1453, and they are displayed in the Sevgi Gönül Building. For travelers interested in the wider story of the city’s past, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums can also complement a museum-focused itinerary.

The museum also has a photography collection. Items in the collection are photographed in high resolution for the museum’s photo archive. These images are accessible upon payment of a reproduction fee for use in publications other than the museum’s own catalogs and publications.

Restoration and conservation

Textile conservation work at Sadberk Hanim Museum workshop

Sadberk Hanim Museum has a textile workshop and a restoration and conservation lab. These facilities are responsible for maintaining the collection in proper conditions so that artifacts can be safely handed down to future generations.

Laboratory work is carried out on the collection’s biological and inorganic objects to conserve and restore them. For items in storage and on display, temperature and humidity levels are regularly checked. In the textile restoration studio, the museum’s textiles are strengthened and stabilized so they can be exhibited.

Library of the Sadberk Hanim Museum

With a collection of 13,147 printed books and 673 manuscripts, the Sadberk Hanim Museum Library is a leading private specialty library. Particularly notable are the 421 rare sâlnâme yearbooks, which form the largest sâlnâme collection in a private library in Turkey and rank among the top five collections in all Turkish libraries.

Graduate students and academics have access to the museum library for research. If you are planning a cultural day in Istanbul, you may also want to pair your visit with major historic sites such as Topkapi Palace, where imperial collections help place Ottoman material culture in a broader context.

Education and activities

Educational activities for children at Sadberk Hanim Museum

Sadberk Hanim Museum offers a variety of educational activities for teachers and children as part of its “Along to the Museum! Discover, Learn, Have Fun” program. These activities are designed to raise children’s awareness of cultural heritage and encourage their interest in culture and art.

Visiting a museum is one of the most enjoyable ways to learn, and it is also a valuable setting for children to develop creative and critical thinking skills. Based on this idea, Sadberk Hanim Museum created its educational project for children, “Along to the Museum! Discover, Learn, Have Fun,” which began in 2014 and has continued since then.

In 2014, art historian İdil Vermeersch created a set of publications for the project’s teaching component. The set includes a teacher’s guide with ideas for introducing children to museum exhibits in a way that is both educational and enjoyable, along with two activity books for primary and junior school-age children. These books present information about ways of life in ancient Anatolian civilizations, Turkey’s cultural heritage, and the museum visit itself.

The activity books, titled Art History and Archaeology, allow children to explore while learning. Each book begins with a story and includes puzzles such as logic games, matching games, crossword puzzles, and line drawings for coloring.

In the art history book, the story follows a girl named Gülendam who lived during the Ottoman era. In the archaeology book, the story follows a boy named Toros who lived during the Roman era. Together, these characters guide young readers through the exercises and turn a museum visit into an enjoyable voyage of discovery.

Items include books, purses, bags, silk scarves, mugs, soap sachets, ceramic objects, jewelry, and umbrellas. These souvenirs are specially prepared for the museum, so it is worth stopping by before you leave.

If you are planning a family museum day, Sadberk Hanim Museum is a strong choice. Especially on weekends, you may come across special activities and events organized for children. Since programs and visitor details may change, it is best to check current information through reliable sources before your visit.
