Fascinating Groves In Istanbul

The Anatolian Grove

You can arrive at this small and pleasant coastal borough in about a one-hour journey, discover its historical fortress, enjoy fish, and inhale the relaxing sea odor.

Resembling a small coastal borough with its historical texture, natural beauty, and fish restaurants, the Anatolian Grove, affiliated with the Beykoz district, is one of the attractive areas where you can witness the incomparable charm of the Bosphorus Cruise route through a merry boat trip taking around one hour.

Serving as an entry gate from the Bosphorus to the Black Sea, this district catches the eye with its two-storey houses on both sides and its rough cobblestone pavements. After strolling the streets, where various ornamental jewelry and souvenirs are offered, you can climb up to the Yorgos Fortress in the district.

The fortress was constructed by the Byzantines. After driving up a hill of 200 meters, you can enjoy a magnificent scene and explore the remains of temples once built for 12 gods. Seized by the Turks in 1305, the fortress was then taken by the Genoese in 1348, who controlled Black Sea arteries of commerce, and later by the Ottomans. For additional historical background, you can check Wikipedia's page on Yoros Castle.

One of the nicest things to do in the Anatolian Grove is simple: enjoy a fish feast. You can sit at one of the fish restaurants beginning from the quay where the ferry docks and stretching across the coastline, or prefer fish in bread offered from small boats.

After your meal, you can try doughnut, a traditional Turkish dessert prepared abundantly throughout the Anatolian Grove, or choose ice cream, which is also easy to find around the district.

The Rumelian Grove

This grove is very much like the Anatolian Grove. It is a cute coastal borough within Istanbul, renowned for its fish restaurants and favored by visitors looking to spend a pleasant day by the water.

The Rumelian Grove, located to the north of the Bosphorus, is affiliated with the Sarıyer district. Situated exactly at the entry point to the Black Sea, the region has always maintained its strategic significance regardless of the state ruling Istanbul.

The district can be considered the projection of the Anatolian Grove on the European side and, exactly like its counterpart, it has the character of a fishing village. It makes you feel that you are both in and out of Istanbul at the same time, and it is especially renowned for its fishmongers lined up in rows.

As visitors from other parts of the city arrive to savor the fish and the sea, the district comes to life. It remains one of the rare and precious locations in Istanbul where the environment appears at its greenest and the sea at its bluest. The panorama that gathers all this beauty together stands among the most charming scenes you can find in the city.

Why visit these groves in Istanbul?

  • Scenic setting: Both districts sit where the Bosphorus meets the Black Sea atmosphere.
  • Historical interest: The Anatolian side includes Yorgos Fortress and layers of Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman history.
  • Seafood culture: Fish restaurants, fishmongers, and casual fish sandwiches are central to the local experience.
  • Village feel: Despite being part of Istanbul, both places feel like small coastal boroughs.

What to pair with your visit

If you enjoy waterside neighborhoods and panoramic views, you may also want to explore Rumeli Fortress on another day. For a broader look at Istanbul's shoreline character, the Bosphorus remains one of the city's most memorable routes.
