Running is gaining popularity in Turkey, and Istanbul’s events give participants more than a physical challenge. They also offer the chance to take in famous landmarks, waterfront views, island roads, and the energy of a city that spans two continents. Some events are designed for serious runners chasing a personal best, while others are open to the public and feel more like a festive city experience.
Below, we look at the main races, their routes, and what makes each one special.
Istanbul marathons and running events at a glance
Istanbul hosts a wide range of events, from the full marathon to half marathons, 10K races, public runs, and themed events. The standout is the Istanbul Marathon, widely known for crossing from Asia to Europe. Other races bring runners to the Historical Peninsula, the Caddebostan coast, and the peaceful roads of the Princes' Islands.
Istanbul Marathon: The Only Intercontinental Marathon
The Istanbul Marathon, also known as the N Kolay Istanbul Marathon, has been drawing runners and spectators since 1979. Its defining feature is that it is the only marathon in the world that spans two continents, Asia and Europe.

Race categories
There are three race categories for both men and women: marathon, 15 km, and public run. There is also a special category for disabled participants, highlighting the event’s inclusive spirit.
Historical significance of the Istanbul Marathon
The idea of running from Asia to Europe, first proposed by the Tercüman Newspaper in 1973, became reality in 1979. The event began with inspiration from a newspaper article and a group of German tourists, then grew into a major international race.
Originally known as the Asia-Europe Run, it later became the Intercontinental Eurasia Marathon. In 2013, it was rebranded as the Istanbul Marathon to promote the city more clearly on the global stage. Over the years, it has developed from a local race into a major sports festival with participants from around the world.
Despite challenges over time, the Istanbul Marathon has remained one of the city’s most important sporting events, bringing together athletics, culture, and the symbolic connection between continents.
Race course of the Istanbul Marathon
The 42K race starts near the 15 July Martyrs Bridge and follows a scenic route through Istanbul. Along the way, runners pass landmarks such as Dolmabahce Palace, the Bosphorus shoreline, and the historic heart of the city before finishing near Sultanahmet.
Start and finish points
The race starts in front of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge Metrobus Station and finishes at the Blue Mosque Square in the Hippodrome area, close to Sultanahmet Square.
Important points and historical places
Along the route, runners encounter major sights including the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, Dolmabahçe Palace, Galata Bridge, the old city streets, and monumental landmarks such as Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace. The finish area near the Hippodrome adds another layer of historical meaning, placing the event in one of the city’s great ceremonial spaces.
International Princes' Islands Half Marathon - Buyukada Half Marathon
For a more peaceful but still rewarding race experience, the Büyükada Half Marathon offers a different side of Istanbul. Held on Büyükada, it gives runners a scenic island backdrop and a calmer atmosphere than the city-center events.

Race tracks
There are three race distances: 5K, 10K, and 21K. The island roads are beautiful but can also be challenging, making this event appealing for runners who enjoy both views and varied terrain. The race ends at the island finish area, where winners receive awards.
Transportation
Büyükada can only be reached by sea, and private boats are not allowed on the day of the event. Participants should use public transportation to get to the race area. For practical ferry information, it is best to check official services such as Şehir Hatları.
Cadde 21K Half Marathon
Organized by Kadıköy Municipality, the Cadde 21K Half Marathon takes place on the traffic-free coastal roads of Caddebostan on Istanbul’s Asian side. It is a strong choice for runners who want a wide, open route by the sea.

Race highlights
In addition to the main race, the event includes a 10K skate race, DJ performances, and exercise classes led by trainers. There is also a children’s race, which adds a community feel to the day.
Children's race
Children born between 2011 and 2016 can join a 500-meter race alongside professional athletes and receive medals.
Istanbul Half Marathon
The Istanbul Half Marathon, sponsored by N Kolay, combines a fast course with one of the city’s most historic settings. This 21 km race takes place on the Historical Peninsula and gives participants the chance to run through an area shaped by thousands of years of history.

Race course
The course is flat, which makes it attractive for runners hoping for a fast time or personal best. Along the route, participants enjoy views of the Marmara Sea, the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn, along with the historical skyline of Istanbul. The race starts at the LANGA bus stop in front of the Yenikapı rally area in Fatih and finishes at the same point.
I am Running Istanbul - Colour Run
The Istanbul'u Koşuyorum Avrupa Etabı, organized by Spor Istanbul, brings a more festive style to the city’s race calendar. Since 2016, these events have aimed to increase participation in road racing in Turkey and create alternative stages in symbolic locations across Istanbul.

In 2023, the series included one stage in Asia and one in Europe. The European-side race in Yenikapı carried the theme of Rhythm and Speed and used a colour run concept with colorful powder thrown during the race.
Race course
The event includes 5K, 5K Relay Race, and 10K categories. DJ booths and live music groups are placed at points along the course to keep the atmosphere lively.
The 10K route starts from the Langa bus stop in Yenikapı, goes toward Sirkeci, passes Kumkapı, Cankurtaran, and Sarayburnu, reaches Gülhane Park Gate, and returns to Yenikapı. The 5K and relay races also start at Langa bus stop and turn back in front of Çatladıkapı Social Facilities before finishing where they began.
To reach the event area, participants can get off at Marmaray Yenikapı Station. For current transport details, official updates from Metro Istanbul can be useful.

One of the best parts of racing here is what comes after. Once the run is over, you can explore Istanbul’s cultural and culinary side, from monumental landmarks to neighborhood streets and local food. That balance of race-day excitement and travel experience is what makes Istanbul such a rewarding destination for runners.
Bonus: Cappadocia Ultra Trail
If your visit to Turkey goes beyond Istanbul, you may also want to consider the Cappadocia Ultra Trail. While it is not one of the city’s races, it offers a very different running experience among valleys, cave dwellings, and fairy chimneys. For runners building a longer Turkey itinerary, it can be an adventurous extension after exploring Istanbul.
