Places to Visit Around Istanbul’s Airports

If you want to visit around Istanbul airports, your options depend on which airport you land at and how much time you have. Istanbul is more than a gateway between continents; it is a city full of culture, history, and everyday local experiences. Whether you arrive at Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side or Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side, there are a few worthwhile places to consider for a short detour or layover.

Places to Visit Around Istanbul’s Airports

Some travelers may prefer to stay close to the airport, while others may want to head into the city for major landmarks such as Hagia Sophia or Taksim Square. This guide focuses on practical nearby options first, so you can decide what makes sense for your schedule.

Visit Around Istanbul Airports: Sabiha Gökçen Airport

Sabiha Gökçen Airport takes its name from Sabiha Gökçen, the adopted daughter of Atatürk and the first woman pilot of Turkey. The airport is located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus and is somewhat far from the city center. If you do not have more than 24 hours of layover, going deep into the city may not be worth the trip and the hassle.

If you plan to spend your layover around the airport, there are still a few time-passing options. Viaport Asia Outlet shopping mall is one of them. With its open-roof layout, Viaport offers a different shopping experience that feels more like a shopping village, where you can move from one boutique to another in the open air.

If you are into car racing, Intercity Istanbul Park is located very close to the airport. It can be a fun stop if you want something more energetic during your wait.

Nature lovers may prefer Aydos Forest, which is only a short taxi ride from Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Here you can hike, get some fresh air, have a picnic, or simply fit in a walk or jog between flights.

If you crave some good Turkish kebab, try Tarihi Çınaraltı Restaurant. Alternatively, you can head toward the Bosphorus for a walk and to feed the seagulls, which remains a popular local activity. If your layover is long enough and you would rather see one of Istanbul’s classic waterfront experiences, a Bosphorus Cruise is one of the city’s most memorable options.

Visit Around Istanbul Airports: Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport was opened only a few months ago and was built to be the biggest airport not only in Istanbul but also in Europe. It is now active with flights taking off and landing from many cities worldwide. Unfortunately, there are not many places to discover nearby, since it is in a more secluded area of the city.

On the European side of Istanbul, the airport is located between the villages of Tayakadın and Akpınar on the Black Sea coast. From Istanbul Airport, which will serve on an area of approximately 77 square kilometers, it is possible to reach Taksim, one of Istanbul’s cultural capitals, in 15-20 minutes. In addition, the airport is at the junction of Çatalca and Göktürk Arnavutköy and is very close to Lake Terkos.

Istanbul Airport can be reached via the Northern Marmara Motorway and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Transportation to the airport is therefore very convenient and easy. If you want to check current public transportation options, routes, or updates, see the official Metro Istanbul website.

Arnavutköy is another option that is somewhat near the airport. For beach-goers, taking a cab to Kilyos Beach for a quick dipping-the-toe session can be fun. Lake Terkos is also part of the wider area, adding a more natural setting to an otherwise transit-focused stop.

If your stopover gives you enough time to reach central districts, you can expand your plan beyond the airport area and see famous sights such as Grand Bazaar or other historic landmarks on the peninsula. For broader official travel inspiration, practical ideas, and destination overviews, you can also browse GoTürkiye.

For many travelers, the key question is not what is closest, but what is realistic. Around SAW, options like Viaport Asia, Aydos Forest, and Istanbul Park can work well without committing to a full city excursion. Around IST, choices are more limited, so a short trip toward Arnavutköy, Kilyos, or directly into central Istanbul may be the better use of time depending on traffic and your connection window.

Before leaving the airport, always consider immigration formalities, baggage needs, and return timing. Istanbul is a large city, and even a short sightseeing plan works best when you leave enough buffer to get back comfortably for your next flight.
